SENSORY DIAGNOSTICS IN

CHILD:

Sensory integration is the ability to properly

feeling, understanding and responding to stimuli

sensual delivered from one's own body and from

environment. In practice, this includes the ability

adapting your behavior to specific

situations and establishing social relationships.

Sensory integration develops throughout human life.

life, but during childhood this development is

the most intense. So when at this stage

certain disorders are diagnosed, children are subjected to

Sensory integration therapy. What does it mean?

in practice?

The development of sensory integration begins in life.

fetal stage and progresses intensively in the first years

child's life. When this process does not proceed

properly, there may be difficulties in everyday life

functioning – eating, dressing, moving,

emotions or concentration. In such cases

sensory diagnosis turns out to be helpful,

allows you to recognize what challenges you are facing

children's nervous system and how they can be supported.

Although many developmental difficulties can be confused

with the "stages of maturation", sensory diagnosis can

be performed on a child around 2 years of age

life if caregivers or specialists (e.g. speech therapist,

physiotherapist, pediatrician) notice disturbing symptoms.

These include, among others, hypersensitivity to touch,

sounds, difficulties with motor coordination, delays

in speech development or strong emotional reactions to

common situations. Early diagnosis allows for implementation

SI therapy and avoid deepening the problems that

can influence social and educational development

child.

What is diagnosis and who performs it?

Sensory diagnosis is performed by

certified sensory integration therapist and

consists of several meetings – including an interview with

parent, child observation and tests

standardized, adapted to his age. The aim

is to understand how a child perceives sensory stimuli

and how it reacts to the outside world. Diagnostic results

allow you to plan an individual program

SI therapy, adapted to the child's needs – both

in the form of exercises in the office as well as recommendations for home use.

Early support can significantly improve quality

the life of the child and the whole family, so it is not worth it

postpone visits to a specialist.

Sensory integration therapy involves the following:

During meetings with the therapist, the child is given doses of

sensory stimuli. The classes are fun and

physical exercises that primarily involve

the child's senses, mind and body. During approximately

hour-long meetings, the therapist encourages the young patient

to take actions adapted to his capabilities

activity, and he closely observes his reactions.

He uses various tools and equipment. These include:

e.g. swings, trampolines, ball pits,

balance beams or special frames. Besides

uses specialized toys and materials for

visual, olfactory, gustatory, etc. stimulation

SI therapy classes are an investment in development

children's sensorimotor skills. Cyclic

meetings with a therapist improve motor coordination,

concentration, language and general skills

functioning of the nervous system. Thanks to them, children

develop adaptability in new situations,

they understand commands better, learn faster and more willingly

or do they show more interest in contacts with

peers.
